Building the ideal gaming computer

Computers were once used merely for… well, computing stuff. Needless to say, though, it didn’t take very long for them to evolve into machines that are capable of a diverse set of functions and applications, including communication, marketing and business and even entertainment. Let’s focus on the latter aspect because it’s more fun.

PCs are now being used by a huge amount of people for procrastination purposes–particularly online gaming. In fact, gamers and enthusiasts have been customizing or buying their own custom PCs for years with high-end, powerful components in order to provide the best gaming experience. Without good components and an overall gaming-bred PC, the quality of the game, including graphics display, sound system and real-time action, is diminished in terrifying and frustrating degrees.

Unfortunately, it is not too uncommon for a gamer to only be familiar with online games and not know anything about software components and computer parts that enable them to operate the machine. To guide you in building the ultimate gaming machine for 2012, here are some good components you should put on your wish list for a nice and reasonably affordable gaming PC:

For the casing, a RaidMax Smilodon Extreme is an ideal choice. Affordable steel mid-tower desktop PC casing with a foldout motherboard panel makes installation of the interior parts effortless. It also comes armed with a 500-watt rated power supply.

For the motherboard, one of the best boards for 2012 is the Z68 and Gen3. These particular motherboards not only support PCI-e 3.0 but they are also designed to be compatible with Ivy Bridge processor. Moreover, the Intel Z68 chipset also renders a good balance between performance and expansion capabilities.

For the processor, you could go for an Intel Core i3-2120. The CPU is less of a critical factor in gaming compared to the graphics card, and a dual core Core i3 is sufficient for most basic gaming setups. With this in mind, the Intel Core i3-2120 provides an exceptional choice with high performance yet with a cheap dual core attribute. The processor may be incapable of being unlocked for overclocking, yet this should not be a huge deal and is to be expected considering the price point it is included in.
Gaming Computer Video cards are of crucial importance when it comes to online gaming. You should consider a Sapphire Radeon HD 6770 1GB. The video card focuses on cost-efficiency yet is still able to render substantial graphics support with up to 1920 x 1080. If looking to play demanding games, such as CrossFire, you will have to consider installing a second video card in addition to an upgrade in power supply as well.

In terms of memory capacity, a G.SKILL 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 Kit is a great buy for gaming needs. Though it might be a more economical choice to get the 4GB memory, various online games can now perform better from the additional storage capacity. Thus, it may be gaming-wise to select the 8GB instead. The memory modules render a speedy 1600 MHz rating that is impressive for gaming performance or attempting to perform slight overclocking.

For the hard drive, a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 750GB SATA drive is a roomy choice on the cheap.

Netflix reporting its first loss in seven years

Netflix is expected to report its first loss in seven years.  The first year or so of my Netflix subscription was great, good movies were easy to find as well as TV shows.  However, after a year or so the movie selection slowly dwindled after having watched most of the good ones.  Why is Netflix, a company that revolutionized the way we watch movies having so much trouble and what can they do to reverse this problem?

Netflix after a while gets stale.  The movies on there are either pretty old or are amateur in quality.  Sure you can find good ones, but after a while they are few and far between.  Companies like HBO and Showtime won’t allow their popular TV series such as Game of Thrones or Dexter on Netflix because they make more money selling DVDs.  It seems Netflix is increasingly becoming useful for only TV shows and children’s content.

With content prices going up and competition increasing, what can Netflix do to keep profitable?  The problem doesn’t really fall on Netflix’s hands, it’s copyright owners.  Movie and TV show producers won’t allow their content to be distributed on Netflix.  If premium content from HBO, Showtime, and Starz was released to Netflix, their subscriber base would go up.
Netflix
Currently HBO and the likes don’t have an adequate method of content distribution.  If Netflix could work out some deal with them, it would be wonderful for everyone.  Many people would subscribe to Netflix to see newly released episodes of shows like Game of Thrones.  It seems like it would be a win win situation for all involved parties.

The problem authors have with eBooks

If you have an eReader you may have noticed that an eBook costs just as much and sometimes more as the physical copy.  This is mainly because authors unlike musicians can’t make up for pirated books.  I think eBooks are at a critical time in their life and it’s time to lower the prices.  Online retailers like Amazon tend to agree and are now slashing the prices on all eBooks.

The problem with books is that authors struggle to monetize their works.  Musicians can afford giving their music away for free because they don’t rely solely on music sales to generate income.  Performing at concerts and selling merchandise is a massive part of a musician’s earnings.  Authors are limited in the fact that the sole way they make money is selling books.

This creates problems in the pricing of new and old eBooks.  New release eBooks are priced the same as books that have been around for years.  Books that can be rented in a library cost just as much to purchase as a newly released book.  Something has to change before it’s too late.
Ebooks
With eBooks you can’t trade digital copies, you can’t borrow them to friends, and you can’t even pass them on in a will.   Currently there’s little to no advantage in purchasing an eBook except for the fact that you don’t have to go to a book store.

With the rise in popularity of tablets and eReaders, it’s imperative the book industry evolves with the times.  They’ve had plenty of time to learn from movie and music sales to learn how to monetize digital media.  Hopefully in time they learn how to moderately price the sales of books and eliminate things like DRM which customers tend to stay away from.

Firefox extensions for a webmaster

As a web developer I frequently use Firefox extensions to increase my productivity.  From getting the pixel color of an image to checking the width of an advertisement, Firefox has an extension for anything you need to accomplish.  Here’s a list of very useful Firefox extensions for web designers.

Install Windows 8 from a USB stick

Setting up your computer to boot Windows 8 from a USB flash drive is easy.  Many people are opting for USB installations of their operating system over CDs.  There are a wide variety of tools that allow you to extract an ISO to a USB drive for installation.

Today we’ll be dealing with Win8USB.  Like their other software which includes support for Windows 7, this program works with just a few clicks.  Grab the Windows 8 ISO which is currently available from Microsoft for free.  Run the program and extract all files to your USB stick.  You’ll need to be running Window Vista or higher in order for this to work properly.  Lastly, just adjust your BIOS to boot from the USB driver before your hard disk.
Windows 8 USBThis is useful because Windows 8 is still not released to the public yet.  Versions are constantly changing and updating, so burning a DVD each time you want to install it is not practical.

Create HTML gallery from directory of images

Sometimes you just want to display your photos quickly.  If you recently downloaded all the photos off your camera and want a quick way to view and share them, uploading to image hosting websites is a pain.  Instead of uploading the entire gallery to fancy image hosts with useless ajax and other sometimes cool but otherwise totally worthless features consider this.  All you have to do is run this program and it’ll create a simple HTML gallery with thumbnail display.  Just upload the HTML and images to your web server and it’s ready to display.

Setting up the gallery is easily done, there’s no configuration options because that’s the point of the script.  All you have to do is set the thumbnail size and the amount of columns to display.  You can leave the HTML file and images on a USB stick to create a portable gallery or upload them to your web server to display for the world.
HTML Gallery
SimpleGalleryMaker requires .NET framework in order to run, so it will only work on Windows operating systems.

Creating Windows virtual desktops

Linux has some cool features, some of which I wish were available for Windows 7.  A virtual desktop is one of those features.  Virtual desktops allow you to have up to four different desktops at once.  You can display different windows on different desktops.  Each virtual desktop has its own windows and desktop icons.

When using a virtual desktop you can drag a window from one desktop to the other and switch desktops with the press of a button.  WindowsPager allows a preview of each desktop in the task bar of your screen to provide you with easy navigation.

There are a few applications that provide this behavior in Windows, but I’ve found WindowsPager to do it efficiently.  The other benefit to this software is that it’s not only free but open source.
Windows virtual desktops
What I wish for future versions:

The software can definitely be improved upon.  With Linux versions of virtual desktop it’s possible to turn your desktop into a 3d rotating cube.  You hit a key and the desktop will automatically turn into a cube.  You can see three sides of the cube and use the arrow keys to navigate between them.  I think combined with Aero, this would be an amazing feature for the Windows versions.

WordPress is more than blogging it’s a full CMS

I started using WordPress software for blogging.  I soon grew to realize it was meant for so much more than that.  After developing a plugin called comment karma I grew familiar with how WordPress functioned.  I began to picture many other ways in which this powerful CMS could be utilized for websites other than blogging.

I started a WordPress theme for my car website and what I ended up with looked nothing like WordPress.  When it was finished it looked like a static website, you couldn’t even tell it used a CMS.  There were no daily posts; there was only listing of different model cars.  Not one thing resembled what a typical blog looks like.  That got me thinking, what else could WordPress be used for?

I figured you could also modify the comments system to create a forum as well.  I Googled and sure enough, there were plugins available to turn your blog into a forum.  With a little modification and the right plugins, WordPress can do just about anything.
Wordpress
Since then I’ve been using WordPress on literally all my websites.  It’s so flexible, it would almost be a mistake not to.  With all the plugins you can download or make for it, there’s pretty much a plugin for anything.  There’s also a large community backing for assistance if you need it.  Until a better CMS comes out, I’ll definitely be using WordPress for all of my sites in the future.
